Avis Rent A Car System, Inc. and its subsidiaries operate the world's second largest general-use car rental business, providing business and leisure customers with a wide range of services at more than 1,700 locations in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Latin American/Caribbean region. Avis is one of the world's top brands for customer loyalty, tying for first place in customer satisfaction for business travelers in the J.D Power and Associates 2001 survey of car rental companies and ranking as the number one brand overall among 147 ranked in the 2001 Brand Keys Customer Loyalty Awards. Avis is also the exclusive car rental partner of Upromise, the way to save for college. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cendent Corporation (NYSE: CD), a diversified global provider of business and consumer services primarily within the real estate and travel sectors.

In 2001, Avis initiated a project to upgrade the printers at their car rental counters. Linda Thompson and Dick Wurtz of the Avis IT group headed the project task team. In their search for a new printer they identified a number of key criteria for evaluation: fast print speed; footprint (size of printer); legibility on multi-part forms; ribbon life and cost; low noise; and, long printhead life. Printers from manufacturers around the world were brought in for months of testing.

The PrintMaster 850 was the top choice of the IT group after the initial screening of printers was completed. The next step involved getting user feedback. A field trial of 10 PM850 printers placed around the country at high volume car rental locations was implemented for several months, resulting in the final seal of approval.

Avis has begun installing 800 of the PM850 printers.
